"10 year Excellent Doctorate Programme"

In order to meet the needs of China’s medical and health causes, Medical College Xiamen University, taken the status quo and characteristics of China’s medical education as well as the strengths and preparation of our university into consideration, tries to pilot the ten-year excellent doctorate program that involves bachelor, master and doctoral studies selecting from the 2011 clinical medicine majors.

I. Goals

According to the sixty concrete standards in the seven domains from Global Minimum Essential Requirements in medical education (GMER), Medical College Xiamen University aims to cultivate well-rounded clinicians and medical scientists with broad knowledge of humanities and sciences, solid medical theories, competent clinical skills and research abilities. At the same time, they should have abilities of dialectal thinking, self-enlightening, and innovation and be devoted to healthcare cause of human beings. Graduates should reach the level of attending doctors and research assistants. Qualified graduates will be conferred an M.D. (Doctor of Medicine) and PhD.

II. Features

2.1 Elite Cultivating Mode

The enrollment number is controlled at around 15 students in line with the “fewer, better” educational philosophy. Medical College pays attention to the cultivation of students in the aspects of basic knowledge and knowledge structure as well as their overall qualities. The tutorial system is implemented to enhance tailor teaching with great care and strict disciplines along with the policies of opening schooling and international communication.

2.2 Tutorial System throughout Bachelor-Master-Doctor Program

The assessment and selective examination is scheduled in the second academic year. Students who pass the assessment and examination are directly under the guidance of PhD/master tutors as their undergraduate tutors. Tutorial group is set up to guide them to do scientific research from the second academic year along with the professional education.

2.3 Early Scientific Research Training

At present, Medical College owes 4 province-level key laboratories and 2 province-level demonstration centers of laboratory teaching. As the national Virtual Laboratory Teaching Center has been in operation and Innovation Practice Program and Foundation Innovation Research Fund of Xiamen University are available, Medical College guarantees that students from the pilot class can join the research group and get the scientific research training so as to make achievements in the lab at the same level with postgraduates.

2.4 Educational Philosophy: Internationalism 

Medical College has signed agreements with Harvard Medical School, Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, Queensland University School of Medicine, Faculty of Medicine, Lund University, and Edinburgh Medical School successively to exchange students and do research cooperatively. Medical College has stipulated Talents Study-Abroad Plan and related incentive measures and gives priority to students from the Ten-year Excellent Doctorate Program.

III. Cultivating Mode

“Module-teaching”mode is adopted to guide the pilot class of bachelor-master-doctor program with the framework of“3+1+2+1+3”. “3” refers to three-year medical basic courses learning; “1” refers to one-year scientific training; “2” refers to two-year clinical courses learning; the latter “1” refers to one-year postgraduate learning; the latter “3” refers to three-year PhD cultivation. 3.1 Basic Common Courses Module

Basic common courses module consists of 13 courses, including advanced mathematics (medicine), college English (I, II, III, IV), inorganic and analytical chemistry B, inorganic and analytical chemistry lab B, organic chemistry B, organic chemistry experiment B, computer application basis, P. E., college Chinese, etc.

3.2 Humanities and Social Sciences Module

Humanities and social sciences module consists of 4 courses, including outline of modern Chinese history, moral cultivation & law basics, introduction to Mao Zedong Thought & theoretical system of socialism with Chinese characteristics, introduction to basic principles of Marxism.

3.3 System Module

Courses in system module include life foundation, disease mechanisms, endocrine system & reproductive system, infection and immunity, nerve and sensory organ, blood system, respiratory system, alimentary system, urinary system, circulatory system, clinical pharmacological treatment, health and society, etc. 

3.4 Skill Module

Courses in skill module include functional lab, clinical basic skills, lifelong learning, communication skills etc.

3.5 Clinical Core Module 

Courses in clinical core module include internal medicine, surgery, pediatrics, neurology, emergency medicine, psychiatry, obstetrics and gynecology, epidemiology, etc.

3.6 Elective Courses Module

There are 29 courses in total.

IV. Enrollment

The enrollment of the ten-year Excellent Doctorate program is affiliated to the general enrollment plan of clinical medicine and aimed at second-grade students studying the 5-year program in clinical medicine with the enrolled number at around 15.

4.1 Registration 

As the second academic year begins, students can register for the enrollment examination by filling in the application form (including basic personal information, study interests and motivation, self-learning abilities, knowledge structure, specialties, awards, social activities, etc.).

4.2 Assessment & Selection

According to the registration, students with qualification are selected and then the comprehensive assessment with written exam and interview is used for further selection with the ratio o f 1:1.5.

4.3 Diversion and Elimination

Time: At the end of the 3rd, 6th and 7thacademic years.

Outlets: Students from the pilot class who do not transfer in the 6th year, their registration roll is affiliated to the 5-year undergraduate class of the same grade; students who reach the graduation standards for undergraduates are allowed to graduate with a bachelor degree of medicine conferred. Students who do not transfer in the 7th year can continue their study in the master class of the same grade; students who reach the graduation standards for postgraduates are allowed to graduate with a master degree of medicine conferred.

4.4 Students who have situations as follows are regarded as not suitable to continue studying and should stop the 10-year program and transfer back to Clinical Medicine specialty :

(1) Students who think they cannot adapt to the 10-year study by themselves or due to health problems or personal reasons, need to offer the transfer application with the written consent from their parents;

(2) Students who fail courses of 6 credits in one semester or courses of 12 credits accumulatively during study period (except P.E. and military training);

(3) Students who fail to pass the clinical operating skill examination;

(4) Students who fail to pass CET 4 or English of their discipline in the 2nd academic year;

(5) Students who violate rules and regulations of the university and are given 2 warnings, 2 severe warnings, or 1 demerit record on academic transcript.

V. Preferential Policy

Medical College is going to set up Specialized Talent Scholarship for pilot-class students for their studies and exchanges at home and abroad. Students study on a state scholarship when entering the phases of master and doctor programs. During the master’s phase, students get subsidies according to the national standards for postgraduates; during the doctoral phase, students get subsidies according to the national standards for doctors.

VI. Signing Study Agreement

Students who pass the assessment need to sign the study agreement with their parents if possible.
